Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is commonly used to refer to heel pain. Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the connective tissue, called plantar fascia, that stretches from the base of the toes, across the arch of the foot, to the point at which it inserts into the heel bone.

There are several causes of plantar fasciitis, including:

  • Overpronating, or rolling your feet when you walk
  • Having flat feet, being older, or being overweight
  • Standing or walking on hard surfaces for extended periods
  • Running, jogging, or performing other activities with a high degree of foot stress

One of the most common symptoms you will notice is stabbing pain in the heel or arch of your foot. The pain can also travel along the side of your foot. This pain may:

  • Be worse in the morning when you first wake up
  • Increase when you stand from a seated position
  • Increase after exercising or being active

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment

Plantar fasciitis symptoms can become severe, impacting your ability to stay active and enjoy your life. Fortunately, your podiatrist can help you get relief from plantar fasciitis pain.

Common professional treatments your podiatrist/chiropodist may recommend include:

  • Custom-fit orthotics and footwear to correct gait issues
  • Prescription anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling and pain
  • Physical therapy to help maintain flexibility and mobility
  • Cortisone injections around your heel to reduce inflammation

If the pain doesn’t get better within a week, or if symptoms get worse, it’s a good idea to see one of our podiatrists as soon as possible for an evaluation. After all, just because plantar fasciitis often causes heel pain doesn’t mean it is the root cause.

Patient Review

I've been so nervous about going to a podiatrist. Coming here totally cleared my mind. Friendly with great care. I was able to get my ingrown toenail taken care of today with ease and it already feels a million times better. I am so grateful I was able to find this place.
